Former President Moon Jae-in strongly criticized the Yoon Seok-yeol government, saying that the Korean Peninsula is currently in the most dangerous situation since the Korean War.
Past conservative governments have also made efforts to achieve peace between the South and the North, but with the Yoon Seok-yeol government giving up on dialogue with North Korea, the situation has deteriorated to the point where military conflict could break out at any moment.

The Pyongyang Joint Declaration, in which former President Moon Jae-in and Chairman Kim Jong-un met in Pyongyang on September 19, 2018 and agreed on denuclearization and military easing.
Former President Moon, who gave the keynote speech at the 6th anniversary event of the Pyongyang Joint Declaration, expressed concern about the current state of inter-Korean relations.

“Since the current government came to power, the September 19 Military Agreement has been broken, and the Korean Peninsula has become a precarious situation where military conflict could break out at any time.”
Former President Moon said, “The current government has worsened the situation by giving up on dialogue and only calling for peace through force.”

“It has made the efforts of past governments to repeatedly express their lack of will for absorption and unification in order to build trust and dialogue with North Korea go down the drain.”
North Korea previously defined inter-Korean relations as two hostile countries, and criticized the government for not taking an active role in reconsidering the existing peace and unification discourse.

“These are things that the South Korean government should take the lead in doing. However, the current government appears to have neither the will nor the ability to do so.”
Former President Moon said that with the U.S. presidential election currently underway, we must prepare in various ways for the possibility of resuming North Korea-U.S. talks.

“To avoid being passed over and marginalized, we must first make an effort to lead the conversation.”
The September 19 North-South agreement, which was made through the Pyongyang Joint Declaration, was under discussion for suspension due to North Korea’s continued violations of the agreement and provocations, and its full effect was suspended in June.
