A 68-year-old man was hit by a falling concrete slab on a balcony while he was renovating a house in Tschagguns (Montafon) on Wednesday. The concrete slab, regarding four meters long and one meter wide, buried the man beneath it. Although two other men with jacks lifted the concrete slab and freed the unconscious 68-year-old, there was no rescue for the man. He died shortly followingwards in hospital from the injuries he sustained.
According to the police, four men who were friends were working on the balcony. They removed brittle spots on one corner of the balcony’s twelve-centimetre-thick concrete slab with a scraping tool. However, the men did not realize that the balcony built in the early 1970s had not been installed properly and professionally. The balcony concrete slab rested only slightly on a wall ledge and was otherwise not connected to the structure. When the 68-year-old passed under the balcony during a break, it suddenly fell and hit the man with full force.
