65 migrants rescued in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais

The boat was rescued by a French Navy patrol boat and the people were taken to the port of Calais.

A new rescue operation took place this Friday in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, announced the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea in a press release.

A boat with 65 migrants on board attempting to cross the English Channel was spotted at sea. A gendarmerie helicopter and the French Navy’s public service patrol boat Pluvier were deployed to the scene.

The ship was finally able to recover all the castaways on board and took them to the port of Calais. They were later taken care of by firefighters and border police.

Repeated attempts

While attempts to cross the English Channel are increasing lately, the maritime prefecture recalls their dangerousness. The sector is “one of the busiest areas in the world” and the weather conditions are often difficult.

This Thursday once more, two attempted crossings were recorded by the prefecture. During two operations, 85 migrants from two boats were rescued. Some were even in the water at the time of the rescue.

Monday, around 700 migrants crossed the Channel on Monday in small boats to reach the English coast, the highest figure since the beginning of the year, according to the British Ministry of Defence.
