As we announced, the 63rd summit of the Conference of Heads of State of ECOWAS was held this Sunday, July 9, 2023 in Bissau. With regard to the conclusions concerning the countries in transition, there were no new sanctions, but the sub-regional body insists on the respect of the deadlines given to the juntas of Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso.

Even if the sanctions taken in 2022 and January 2023 have not been lifted, the military in power can rub their hands, because there have been no others. However, an extraordinary summit will take place soon and which will be devoted to the situation of these countries.

The Conference of Heads of State insists on: strict compliance with the electoral timetable; the transitional authorities not to obstruct the work of the mediators.

According to the president of the ECOWAS commission, Dr Alieu Touray, in the event of “non-compliance” with these recommendations, sanctions might apply. Already since his election as President of the Conference of Heads of State of the sub-regional body, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also President of Nigeria, has shown his opposition to the maintenance of the military in power.
