LAS VEGAS- A 63-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Idaho.

Anubor Bagbi was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford to pay restitution totaling $886,879.86.

Additionally, he was sentenced to 5 years of supervised release.

“This defendant callously victimized American companies, individuals, and taxpayers through his criminal actions,” said U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit. “His sentencing shows that those who commit mail fraud, identity theft and COVID relief, whether separately or in combination, will be brought to justice.”

According to the statement from the Prosecutor’s Office, the crimes were committed between May and December 2022. Bagbi obtained fraudulent or stolen checks issued to legitimate companies and then established fraudulent bank accounts in several states, including Idaho.

To open the fraudulent accounts, Bagbi registered the business names with the Secretary of State and obtained employer identification numbers from the IRS. He used illegal documents, fake IDs, tax documents and fabricated utility bills to accomplish his criminal purposes, according to the report.

In addition to bank fraud, in April 2020, Bagbi applied for and received funds through the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Loans under the CARES Act.

The man allegedly submitted documents and applications on behalf of himself and others for companies that did not exist. Therefore, he caused a loss of $664,828.

With all his crimes, he stole more than $850,000.

People with any information regarding possible fraud related to COVID-19 are urged to report and call the Department of Justice’s National Disaster Fraud Center at 866-720-5721 or visit the portal here.
