Jerusalem – More than 60,000 Palestinians held Eid al-Fitr prayers today, Wednesday, at Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied city of East Jerusalem, without any festive atmosphere, to express their grief for the victims of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip for 6 months.
On their way to Al-Aqsa Mosque and as they were leaving, the worshipers chanted “Allahu Akbar,” according to what Anatolia Agency reported.
The Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem announced in a brief statement that more than 60,000 worshipers performed Eid al-Fitr prayers in Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Despite the rain, worshipers began arriving at the mosque following dawn prayers.
Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that the Israeli police beat some worshipers as they entered and left the mosque in the Bab al-Asbat and Bab al-Silsilah areas in the Old City.
A number of worshipers, who were removed from Al-Aqsa Mosque by decisions of the Israeli police, performed prayers at the outer doors of the mosque.
After the prayer ended, the Palestinians went to the cemeteries near the Old City to read Al-Fatihah to the souls of their relatives.
The city witnessed an intense deployment of Israeli police forces in the vicinity and alleys of the Old City, and there was no festive atmosphere, due to the continuation of the Israeli war on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has so far resulted in the death of 33,360 Palestinians and the injury of 75,993 others, most of them children and women. The aggression also caused massive destruction of infrastructure, leaving an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to Palestinian and international reports.
