“This major reconversion project will allow us to kill three birds with one stone,” explains Flemish Minister Sven Gatz, in charge of Education and School Construction, in a press release. Firstly, we will open no less than 1,150 additional places in Dutch-speaking secondary education. […] Secondly, the cutting-edge sports infrastructure will delight many sports clubs. And, third, we will convert an unoccupied office building into a strategically located school campus.”
An investment of 60 million euros
Concretely, the project concerns the renovation of an old office building currently empty, the structure and “H” shape of which lends itself ideally to the creation of an educational establishment. With an investment of 60 million euros, the future campus will house the secondary schools the “Koninklijk Atheneum Etterbeek” (GO community network!) which will offer a general curriculum to 750 students and the Imelda Institute (ASBL KatOBA) which will offer a technical and professional course for 400 students. Each school will be integrated autonomously into the existing structure, through a certain number of interventions and structural adjustments.

The campus will also include more than 2,000 m² of sports infrastructure and a 375 m² theater room. During school hours, these will be made available to students from campus schools and nearby schools. Outside, they will be open to sports clubs. The site will also house multi-purpose community spaces (approximately 590 m²) which can be used by the Gemeenschapscentrum De Maalbeek.
Finally, 125 parking spaces will be provided for teachers and visitors, to benefit mobility in the district.
Sustainability and circularity
“This project is not a simple reconversion project,” remarks Jean-Philip Vroninks, CEO of Befimmo, also quoted in the press release. This is tangible proof of our commitment to sustainability and the promotion of Dutch-speaking education in Brussels. We are resolutely focusing on circular renovation and ensuring that the structure of the existing building is maintained as far as possible, with the aim of making it a multi-purpose school campus.”
