60 migrants on the boat died of hunger and thirst

The migrants’ rubber boat broke down near the coast of Libya, leaving them stranded for days at sea, during which hunger and thirst claimed the lives of 60 people.

According to the World News Agency, the Ocean Viking team saw the boat in the open sea and a rescue operation was conducted with the help of the Italian Coast Guard, during which 25 migrants were saved.

After giving immediate medical aid and water to these emaciated and semi-dead people, they were shifted to the nearest hospital, where the death toll is expected to increase due to the critical condition of more than a dozen people.

The bodies of 60 migrants were also recovered from the boat in the rescue operation. The survivors said that these men died of hunger and thirst. The boat ran out of food and drink.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), last year was the deadliest year for migrants when 8,565 people lost their lives trying to cross the border illegally. This number broke the record of last 10 years.

The United Nations agency also said that the number of migrants drowning in 2023 is 20 percent higher than last year.

The deadliest for migrants was the Mediterranean, with 3,129 deaths in 2023, the highest number since 2017 and the same number so far this year.
