6 years with Podcast of the Year and 3 years with Medvedomost

Introduction

Last year, Czech Radio celebrated the centenary of its existence. Over the past few years, its grandchild, the podcast, has been slowly but surely growing in popularity. Not only do Czechs listen to an average of 22 hours of podcasts per month, last year up to one hundred thousand citizens of the Czech Republic voted for their favorite Podcast of the Year poll.

The very first audio blogs were already created in the 80s, but podcasts have only been talked regarding since 2004, because portable music and word players, such as iPods, became popular among users (that’s why the name podcast was adopted as a combination of the words iPod and broadcasting, English broadcasting) .

The history of Czech podcasts is much shorter. The first podcast has the trick, who else but Czech Radio, specifically the project Zasni! From 2017. Around this time, Dan Tržil, the person behind the České podcasty platform, also discovered the beauty of podcasts. Two years later, the Podcast of the Year award began. The first year won the Mathematics of Crime podcast. (For the last three years, the act True Crimes has been beating the rivals. As you can see, we want to live peaceful lives without any threats, but from time to time we like to let the tension tickle our nerves.)

Today, regarding half of the Internet population listens to these Internet microradios. They can choose from 7,000 podcasts, although only 1,700 of them are active (in the sense of a new episode per month).

Spring 2021 was in full swing and I set up an Anchor account and uploaded our first episode. The next chapter of the existence of Medvedomostó, the gloss I am writing, has begun to be written. The most listened to episode is Robot Caregiver (also available as a text on Seznam), while the most read article is the text “What the teachers taught us” (with 5,200 reads, it literally overcame its Medvedomostní competition). 2021 – So Medvdomnost enters the scene only one year following True Crimes and two years before Čestmír Strakatý. They preceded Babišovo Sorry jako* and Ornella with Agáta by a whole three years. Do you notice that my project already has some tradition, but also room for growth?
