(CNN Spanish) –– An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 shook the coast of Panama on Tuesday, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS, for its acronym in English).
The seismic focus was located 13 kilometers deep, and the epicenter was located 71.8 kilometers north of Boca Chica, in the Chiquirí region, and 89.1 kilometers north of Pedregal in the same area. Initially, the USGS reported that the earthquake had been of magnitude 6.6 and had been registered in southern Panama.
The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) told CNN that the earthquake did not cause damage or victims, although some schools were evacuated as a precaution at the time. The entity indicated that the earthquake had been of magnitude 6.7.
He also added that the movement originated in the south of the country, on the island of Coiba, in the province of Veraguas —between the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos. —, a 10 kilometers deep. The tremor was also felt in the provinces of Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Panama and West Panama, according to Sinaproc.
The earthquake paralyzes a professional soccer match
The earthquake paralyzed a match between the Atlético Chiriquí and CD Universitario clubs, which was being played at the San Cristóbal stadium, in the city of David, Chiriquí province, the Panamanian Football League (LPF) informed CNN.
The event was recorded by Tigo Sport Panama, which broadcast the match, and shared it on their social networks. In the video, the moment of stress due to the earthquake was captured, which caused players and some fans to take the court.
The LPF explained that, following 30 minutes of paralysis by protocol for these cases, the game was resumed. It ended with a goalless draw.
