The GeForce RTX 4070 would have the same number of CUDA cores as its ancestor, the GeForce RTX 3070, but 4 GB more VRAM, which is also GDDR6X; in fact, its memory configuration would be identical to that of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.
The launch of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, aka the renamed RTX 4080 12GB, in early January is pretty much a certainty now: Colorful confirmed the existence as well as some specs of this benchmark a few days ago. After the GeForce RTX 4090, GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, the next graphics card in the series should in principle be the GeForce RTX 4070. This is therefore the occasion for the serial leaker kopite7kimi, often not stingy with predictions , to share his clairvoyance.
According to him, the GeForce RTX 4070 will have 5888 CUDA cores and 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus. The quantity of CUDA cores corresponds to that of the GeForce RTX 3070. This graphics card, on the other hand, is content with 8 GB of VRAM, which is moreover GDDR6, on a 256-bit interface. The VRAM configuration assumed by kopite7kimi corresponds to that of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. Finally, the RTX 4070 is said to have a TDP of 250W, 35W lower than the Ti grind.
Avoid the GeForce RTX 3060 8GB: it performs up to 18% less than the original
What launch date?
As you will see in the table below, the GPU specs vary a bit between the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070, but otherwise they are pretty close if not identical. From this observation, NVIDIA might draw the RTX 4070 quite quickly. We by definition don’t have anything tangible to support this hypothesis, but without the cancellation of the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, we can assume that the company would have unsheathed the RTX 4070 at the start of the year. Two elements are however likely to have an impact on the launch date: the stocks of GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 to sell, and the absence of Radeon RX 7800. Roughly, as long as there are RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 for sale and AMD settles for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX / XT, there is no rush for NVIDIA.
