The number 51 Ferrari AFCore, driven by Italian Pier Guidi and ex-Formula 1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi and Briton James Calado, beat a Toyota on Sunday following a late pit drama. The Japanese missed their sixth consecutive triumph in the long-distance classic.
The day also ended successfully for the Austrian Rene Binder. The Tyrolean finished third in the LMP2 class. The Oreca 07 was driven by Neel Jani from Switzerland and Nico Pino from Chile. In the overall standings, the trio starting for the French Duqueine team ended up in 12th place. Two places behind were also classified in the LMP2 with the Belgian team WRT Ferdinand Habsburg.
The finish of the anniversary race was tough. After the final pit stop, Guidi was only able to drive off following a restart of the car. The Toyota team around Swiss ex-Formula 1 driver Sébastien Buemi, who had actually already been beaten, sensed their chance once more. Ferrari’s lead had melted to 51 seconds, but it should be enough. At the Le Mans comeback following 50 years, the Scuderia’s racing car ended the race 1:22 minutes ahead of the Toyota GR010 Hybrid.
