5,733 people were killed or disappeared for belonging to the UP: JEP

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) delivered this Friday the figures of people killed and disappeared in the framework of the violence once morest members of the Patriotic Union party.

“I want to emphasize that following 40 years of a high level of impunity, it is a notable advance to have carried out this preliminary investigation in which it is pointed out that at least 5,733 people linked to the UP were victims of very serious crimes”, Judge Eduardo Cifuentes, president of the JEP, commented during the hearing.

During the hearing that took place this Friday morning, the Court of Peace Recognition Chamber determined that the violence once morest the members of the UP was carried out, for the most part, by members of the State and paramilitaries.

The JEP collected information on attacks that occurred once morest members of that community between 1984 and 2016. During that time, the report indicates, 5,733 people were killed or disappeared for the fact of belonging to the Patriotic Union.

“The results of the analysis carried out by the Chamber showed that, of the 5,733 victims, 4,616 were victims of homicide and 1,117 were forcibly disappeared”, the court stated.

The Recognition Chamber also said that until January 31 of this year it had 150 appearing – willing to join the JEP to contribute to the principles of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-Repetition – who belonged to the Army (95), DAS (22), National Police (13) and 26 more that belonged to other State agencies .

In the universe of victims, compiled by the JEP, it was found that at least 538 people did not belong to the UPbut that in the midst of attacks on that community, they were killed or disappeared.

The emergence of the UP dates back to 1985. The political party was created following the peace talks in Uribe, Meta. So the negotiation was between the FARC and the government of Belisario Betancur.
