The minister Alexander de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), took a drastic measure this Friday (30) by ordering the immediate and total suspension of the operation of the social network X (formerly known as Twitter) in Brazil. For the platform, the measure was already expected, since the company refused to comply with a series of court orders, including the appointment of a legal representative in the country and the payment of fines.

Moraes orders immediate blocking of X in Brazil

Moraes’ order requires that the suspension remain in effect until all court orders are fully complied with. This includes payment of fines imposed by the Brazilian courts and the formal appointment of a legal representative for the company in the country. In addition, the Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) was ordered to take the necessary measures to implement the blockade, and must notify the STF within 24 hours.

In addition to the blockade by Anatel, Moraes determined that technology giants Apple e Google remove the X app from their virtual stores (App Store and Google Play) and implement technological obstacles to prevent access to the app in Brazil. The order also extends to internet providers, who must block access to the platform. The use of VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to bypass the blockade is also under attack, with daily fines of R$50,000 for those who attempt to circumvent the decision.

What does X (Twiter) say?

OX, in turn, had already expressed that it would not comply with the court orders, accusing Moraes of trying to censor political opponents. In a statement made on Thursday (29), the platform said it expected the blockade in Brazil and committed to publicly disclosing all court orders received for transparency purposes.

The conflict between the STF and X has its roots in the platform’s failure to follow Brazilian legal guidelines, culminating in a series of financial penalties and now, the suspension of its activities in the country. The situation also involves the StarlinkMusk’s satellite internet company, whose bank accounts were frozen as part of legal actions to ensure payment of fines imposed on X.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also commented on the case, emphasizing that any company operating in Brazil must comply with the Constitution and Brazilian laws. The U.S. Embassy, in turn, said it is monitoring the situation, highlighting the importance of freedom of expression in a healthy democracy.
