After decades as a mainstay of the Windows operating system, the Control Panel is about to say goodbye. After some rumors that have been circulating on the internet for some time now, Microsoft officially announced that the Control Panel is “in the process of being discontinued” in Windows 11. The company’s idea is to officially use the Settings app, which promises a more modern and simplified experience.
Microsoft will eliminate the Control Panel in Windows 11
Rumors about the end of the Control Panel are nothing new. Ever since 2011, when a leaked screenshot of Windows 8 suggested that the Control Panel would be replaced by “PC Settings”, Microsoft has been signaling that this change was inevitable. However, despite the indications, the Control Panel has remained present in the most recent versions of Windows.
In 2015, a Microsoft employee confirmed that Settings would eventually replace Control Panel. Even so, the tool remained firm, as some features had not yet been migrated to the new application.
Microsoft explained that the decision to eliminate the Control Panel was made in order to provide a more cohesive and updated user experience. The Settings app was developed with the aim of simplifying access to system settings and tools, providing a more intuitive interface, especially for new users.
In a new support page, the company details that Control Panel is being phased out, but it still exists for compatibility reasons. This means that for now, it will continue to be available to provide access to some settings that haven’t yet been fully integrated into the Settings app.
