The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexander de Moraesdecided to increase the fine applied to the platform Xformerly known as Twitter, due to its failure to comply with court orders in Brazil. The social network had already accumulated a fine of R$300,000, but after failing to comply with new decisions, the amount of the penalty increased to R$200,000 for each profile that was not blocked as determined by the court.

STF increases the amount of the fine for X to R$ 200 thousand

Initially, the fine was R$50,000 per day, but, with the persistent non-compliance with court orders, Moraes decided to increase the penalty to R$200,000 per profile not blocked.

According to the minister’s order, the platform has up to five days to pay the accumulated fine, under risk of new sanctions and legal measures. Moraes emphasized that continued non-compliance could lead to even more severe consequences for the social network.

Shortly after the decision, platform X issued a statement to its users, informing them about the increase in the amount of the fine, indicating possible disagreement with the measures imposed.

What is happening?

Among the profiles that should be blocked by platform X is that of the senator Val’s Milestonesthe influencer Ednardo Raposobesides the journalist’s daughter Oswaldo Eustaquio and other people involved in investigations related to the so-called “digital militias”. The platform’s resistance to complying with these determinations was the main reason for the increase in the fine.

With a tight five-day deadline to pay the fine, X faces a dilemma: follow the court orders and block the indicated profiles or continue to resist, running the risk of facing even heavier sanctions. The outcome of this impasse could have significant implications for the future of the platform in Brazil, in addition to impacting the company’s relationship with the Brazilian Judiciary.
