What is the difference between OLED and QLED screens?
When buying a Smart TV today, we have two main options: the first is OLED, a relatively new technology that has revolutionized the way the image is transmitted on the panel. The main plus point is the extremely dark dark tones and high contrasts. The downside is the high price.
The second option is QLED, a technology that takes LCD screens to the extreme: instead of using huge light bars like backlightsmaller LEDs are used in lighting zones (dimming zones). This technology tries to replicate as much as possible the effect we have from OLED TVs, and with each passing year it becomes more difficult to differentiate between both technologies, as in the recent analysis we did of TCL’s Mini LED TV.
We have a complete story that explores in depth the main differences between the screens, but in short:
- OLED significa “Organic Light Emitting Diode” (organic light-emitting diode);
- QLED significa “Quantum Dot LED TV” (Quantum dots LED TV);
- OLED is a totally different technology from LCD, QLED is a variation of LCD;
- OLED is emissive (pixels emit their own light);
- QLED is transmissive (LED lamps are lit at the bottom of the TV).
