Rome: Italy is set to levy a fine of 10,000 euros (Rs 9 lakh) to 60,000 euros (Rs 54 lakh) on those who damage historical monuments or cultural centers. According to the proposal put forward by the Minister of Culture, Genaro Sanguiliano, the money collected in this way can be used for the maintenance and cleaning of the monuments. It is expected that the legislation, which has received the support of the Italian cabinet, will also be approved by the parliament and become law.
The 15th-century Palazzo Madama, which houses the Italian Senate, was recently attacked. According to the culture minister, 40,000 Euros (Rs 36 lakh) were needed to clean the front part of the building. The giant fountain under Rome’s famous Spanish Steps was recently painted black by climate activists. The minister also pointed out that such actions will have a heavy impact on the economic sector.
In July last year, two American tourists were fined $430 (Rs 35,000) by the Italian police for driving an electric scooter through the Spanish Steps and causing more than $26,000 (Rs 21 lakh) worth of damage.
