Fifty-three immigrants, of which two were identified as the traffickers, were rescued by the Coast Guard to the west of Zakynthos and were transferred to the port of Patras on the morning of Saturday 28/09/2024

As the Coast Guard stated in its announcement, the passengers rescued by a lifeboat 40 nautical miles west of Zakynthos. The boat carrying the migrants began sinking at noon on Saturday and appears to have been initially approached by another vessel. A Coast Guard lifeboat belonging to the force of the Port Authority of Patras rushed to the scene.

On the ship with the flag of Saint Christopher and Nevis a total of 35 men, 7 women and 11 minors were on board.

The immigrants ethey had started from the coast of Marmaris, Turkey, bound for Italywhile they paid for their transportation the amount of eight thousand to ten thousand euros each. From the Central Port Authority of Patras, which conducts the preliminary investigation, in cooperation with the Maritime Border Protection Directorate two foreigners (nationals of Iran), aged 36 and 46, were arrested, who were identified as the operators of the vessel, while two mobile telephone devices were seized.

The Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Patras, analyzes and processes in depth all the evidence that has emerged and investigates the possible expansion of the activities of the members of the criminal organization in question, as well as their cooperation with other members of organized circles with the same or similar criminal activities.

The immigrants they were temporarily located in the former vaccination center in the area of ​​the port of Patras and tomorrow they will be transferred to a hosting structure in Athens.

The Deputy Governor of Achaia Fokion Zaimis, responsible for Civil Protection issues, was at the facilities of the port of Patras and stated:
“The Civil Protection of the PE of Achaia is present in the rescue of the 53 passengers, whose boat emitted sos off Zakynthos. The persons were collected after a coordinated rescue operation by the Coast Guard from a commercial ship heading to the port of Patras. After a timely notification from the Central Port Authority of Patras, we offered essential items and will assist in their transport to an organized structure in the capital in the coming hours/days after completion of the procedure prescribed by the Port Authority and the Police. The PDE, OLPA, the Municipality of Patras, the Holy Metropolis of Patras, SKEANA and Erythros Stavros contributed to the work of the Authorities”.
