Awareness and willingness to participate in Smart Green Industrial Complex RE100 are 21.9%p and 19.9%p lower than the total
Rep. Yang Lee Won-young said, “There is a need to pass a partial amendment to the New and Renewable Energy Act on the basis of support for renewable energy facilities for small and medium-sized companies.”
Rep. Yang Lee Won-young
[에너지데일리 변국영 기자] It was found that more than half of the companies moving into smart green industrial complexes do not know regarding RE100.
According to the ‘RE100 Demand Survey Report on Industrial Complex Occupants (2022)’ submitted by Korea Industrial Complex Corporation to National Assembly member Yang Lee Won-young of the Democratic Party of Korea (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee), 53.6% of companies in smart green industrial complexes have RE100 requirements. It was found that only 17.9% were unaware of the system and had the intention to pursue RE100.
The ‘Awareness of RE100’ and ‘Intention to Participate in RE100’ of companies residing in smart green industrial complexes were found to be 21.9%p and 19.9%p lower, respectively, compared to the total. According to the report, only 46.4% of companies moving into smart green industrial complexes were partially aware of RE100, and 0% were fully aware of it. 82.1% of companies moving into smart green industrial complexes also showed no intention to pursue RE100.
These results were found to have an impact on ‘whether to use new and renewable energy’ and ‘usage plans’ of companies moving into smart green industrial complexes. It was found that 89.6% of companies moving into smart green industrial complexes are not currently using renewable energy and have no plans to use it. This result is 7%p higher than the total. Only 5.2% of respondents said they do not currently use renewable energy but have plans to use it.
The highest response was that the ratio of renewable energy use compared to the company’s total energy use was less than 10%. Among companies moving into smart green industrial complexes, 89.3% responded that their use of new and renewable energy was less than 10%. However, among companies that responded that their use of renewable energy was more than 40%, 10.5% of companies located in smart green industrial complexes were 7% points higher than the total.
For companies with such a high rate of use of new and renewable energy, government support appears to have played a major role. The proportion of companies that partially invested in new and renewable energy using government-supported projects was 71.4%, 18.6% points higher, for companies residing in smart green industrial complexes. Furthermore, in the case of new and renewable energy used through self-construction, the percentage of respondents who responded that solar energy was the highest at 71.4%.
Regarding government support required for the use of new and renewable energy, companies residing in smart green industrial complexes responded that ▴ from a financial perspective, 88.5% said ‘full direct support for facility investment costs’ ▴ from an institutional perspective, 45.6% needed ‘new and renewable energy infrastructure support’ I answered yes. In the case of RE100 promotion, ▴60.7% responded that there was a lack of direct government support from an institutional perspective, and ▴50% responded that there was a lack of internal capacity for continuous operation and maintenance of implementation means from an overall perspective.
National Assembly member Yang Lee Won-young said, “As the smart green industrial complex was created considering the reality that industrial complexes account for a significant portion of energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions, it not only builds energy efficiency and renewable energy infrastructure for tenant companies, but also provides measures such as RE100 and the carbon border adjustment system. “There is a need for more active education and promotion in response to carbon trade barriers, but such opportunities are not being provided to companies residing in smart green industrial complexes,” he said. “In the case of small and medium-sized companies, they are in dire need of support as they have not prepared a plan to procure renewable energy.” Therefore, there is an urgent need to pass the ‘New Energy Act Amendment’ proposed last year,” he said. The amendment to the New Energy Act proposed by Rep. Yang Yi is aimed at ‘establishing a basis for financial and administrative support for the installation of renewable energy facilities by small and medium-sized companies located in industrial complexes.’
