In May alone, 3,349 asylum applications and interceptions were made in Quebec. Since January 1, 2022, more than 13,000 migrants have crossed via Roxham Road in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, the irregular passage par excellence.
According to the CIUSSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, 1,150 beds out of 1,200 are occupied by migrants in the Montreal region, in particular at the Place Dupuis hotel.
“We are making great efforts to adequately welcome newcomers and offer them opportunities, therefore waiting times of more than 12 months are inadmissible. The reception capacity of Quebec is not unlimited and, with the massive and constant arrivals of the last few weeks, the accommodation capacity has been reached, ”wrote the Minister of Labor Jean Boulet.
“I expect the federal government to keep its commitment not to overburden our resources and for this reason I have requested the transfer of some asylum seekers to temporary accommodation in Ontario. To date, 520 asylum seekers have been transferred to hotels in Ontario,” he continued in his statement.
