50th edition

The one that is nicknamed the five 4000 race – in reference to the majestic peaks of more than 4000 meters which dominate it – is a reference in the middle of the trail.

It attracts the best athletes in the world every year, whether they come from road, mountain or trail running. Its rolling course, mainly uphill, makes it a unique race that can suit several types of runners.

For the 50th edition, most of the former winners of the race will be present, some for the pleasure of racing once more on this legendary course, others to show that they are still the masters of the place.

Will the records of Kilian Jornet (2:25:35) and Maude Mathys (2:49:20) fall? Answer on August 12 to find out!

Favorites

While an injury kept her off the trails of the Golden Trail World Series at the start of the season, Nienke Brinkman (Nike Trail, Netherlands) should make her comeback on this 50th edition of Sierre-Zinal.

Will the reigning GTWS champion have recovered all of her abilities? She will have to because she will have a lot to do on the Swiss trails, and will notably have to face Judith Wyder (Hoka One One, Switzerland), who has shown that she is back at her best level following her victory on the DoloMyths Run, 3rd stage of the GTWS.

These two girls will have to watch out for another GTWS winner this year: Sophia Laukli (Salomon, USA) won the Marathon du Mont-Blanc this season and finished 2nd in the DoloMyths Run.

The list of contenders for victory continues with Philaries Kisang (Run2gether, Kenya), 2nd in Sierre-Zinal in 2022 and vice-world champion in mountain running (vertical) this year.

Allie McLaughlin (Hoka One One, USA) is also entering the Series this year. After leading the end of the 2022 season and notably winning two stages during the final in Madeira, it will certainly be thirsty for victory in this 50th edition of Sierre-Zinal.

We will also have to keep an eye on girls like Sarah McCormack (Inov-8, Ireland), Lucy Wambui Murigi (Run2gether, Kenya), Daniela Oemus (Salomon, Germany), Miao Yao (Salomon, China) or Nuria Gil (Asics , Spain).

Favorites

He was one of the favourites… Unfortunately a hip injury will prevent Kilian Jornet (Nnormal, Spain) from starting this 50th edition of Sierre-Zinal. The race record holder will still be present at the event in order to share with all the runners.

In the absence of Kilian, Rémi Bonnet (Salomon / Redbull, Switzerland) is the favorite. The winner of the GTWS 2022 and the Marathon du Mont-Blanc 2023 has made it clear that he wants to win the Swiss stage this year.

However, he will have to face Patrick Kipngeno (Run2gether, Kenya), 2nd last year at Sierre-Zinal.

Petro Mamu (Scarpa, Eritrea) already won the race in 2016 and is often highly ranked there each year. He notably finished 3rd last year by overtaking Kilian Jornet in the sprint just before the finish line.

Philemon Ombogo Kiriago (Run2gether, Kenya) finished 5th in the 2022 edition, overtaken by Kilian Jornet in the final downhill. Will he be able to go for the podium this year?

Robert Pkemoi (Sky Runners Kenya, Kenya) is currently 11th overall in the GTWS, with a fine 5th place finish in Zegama at the start of the season. Be careful despite everything to this boy whose profile corresponds much more to the route of Sierre-Zinal!

Other big names are also to be watched on this race like Robbie Simpson (Adidas Terrex, United Kingdom), Elhousine Elazzaoui (Pini Mountain Racing, Morocco), Eli Hemming (Salomon, United States), Matthias Kyburz (Salomon, Switzerland ) or Cesare Maestri (Nike Trail, Italy).
