More than 50,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported across the country. It is the highest record in 17 weeks as of Monday.
The Central Quarantine Countermeasures Headquarters announced that as of 00:00 on the 8th, the number of confirmed cases of Corona 19 increased by 55,292, bringing the total to 20,54,420. On this day, the number of new confirmed cases was 52,215 fewer than the previous day (105,057).
The number of new cases usually hits a low on Monday, as diagnostic tests decline over the weekend. Nevertheless, as of Monday’s announcement, there were 50,000 new confirmed cases, the first in 17 weeks since 99,12 people on April 11.
Quarantine authorities and experts are predicting that the COVID-19 outbreak is approaching its peak. There are predictions that it might peak this week or at the latest this month and turn into a downtrend at the earliest.
However, the number of confirmed cases, which had stalled for a while due to a decrease in the number of tests during the holiday season, may temporarily increase, and even if the peak is broken, the epidemic is expected to continue for a long time.
Among the new confirmed cases, the number of imported cases was 482, two fewer than the previous day (484), but it has maintained a high level of 400 to 500 for eight days in a row this month.
Excluding imported cases, the number of local infections in Korea is 54,810.

The number of patients with severe gastritis was 324, an increase of 27 from the previous day (297). 85.8% (278 cases) of patients with severe gastritis are elderly people over 60 years of age.
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 that died the day before was 29, an increase of two from the previous day (27). The deaths were 19 people in their 80s or older (65.5%), 6 in their 70s, 2 in their 60s, and 1 in their 50s and 40s, respectively.
The cumulative death toll was 25,292, and the cumulative fatality rate of COVID-19 remained at 0.13% for a long time, but dropped to 0.12% on the same day.
With an increase in patients with severe cases, bed utilization is also increasing. The utilization rate of beds for severe cases was 40.3% (679 out of 1,686), an increase of 3.3 percentage points (p) from the previous day (37.0%).
The utilization rate of semi-severe beds was 62.2%, up 3.7%p from the previous day (58.5%). The utilization rate of hospital beds for moderate to severe cases was 45.2%, up 1.6 percentage points from the previous day (43.6%).
