500 solutions for a circular plastic economy

The No Plastic In My Sea association and its partners, Réseau Consigne, Réseau Vrac and the Institut du Commerce unveil the report “500 solutions to plastic pollution and 12 recommendations” to accelerate the transformation of our production and distribution methods into to reduce plastic pollution.

To act once morest plastic pollution, the legislative arsenal is being strengthened. The European Directive on single-use plastics and the anti-waste law for a circular economy, known as the “Agec law”, advocate the development of recycling and reuse of plastic packaging in France and in Europe. To achieve these objectives and scale up certain solutions that have shown their maturity, the No Plastic In My Sea association and its partners, Réseau Consigne, Réseau Vrac and the Institut du Commerce publish the report 500 solutions to plastic pollution and 12 recommendations. On the menu: solutions for reducing single-use plastics through reuse, bulk sales and eco-design.

Reduce the use of plastic bottles

No Plastic in my sea is primarily interested in the reduction of plastic bottles. In France, the Agec law aims for a 50% reduction in plastic bottles placed on the market by 2030 compared to 2020. In the absence of a timetable provided for by law, the association encourages producers of bottled drinks and water to develop their reduction plans. The association relies in particular on existing water and beverage fountain solutions for professionals. “We are targeting plastic bottles as a priority, because it is almost half of household packaging and the first single-use waste found on beaches according to the 2018 study by the European Commission”explains Muriel Papin, General Delegate of No Plastic In My Sea.

A real change of use is on the way. Since January 2022, the Agec law also obliges establishments with more than 300 people receiving the public to equip themselves with at least one drinking water fountain, accessible free of charge with clear signage, and to connect it to a water network. drinkable. The report urges those establishments that have not yet installed and reported these water points to catch up by June 2023. “These water points where people might easily fill their water bottles are too underdeveloped: there should be them everywhere in stations, airports, museums and shopping centers”emphasizes Muriel Papin.

Towards more reuse

The reduction of plastic pollution will go through the development of reuse. The Agec law provides in particular that 5% of packaging put on the market will be reused in 2023, 10% in 2027. No plastic in my sea calls on all the sectors concerned to develop solutions as quickly as possible, relying in particular on the budget of 50 million euros, dedicated to the development of reuse solutions, announced by the eco-organisation Citéo.

“There are solutions that exist, startups that are able to work with large groups, insists Muriel Papin. There is investment from Ademe and eco-organizations, so there is no reason for the big brands and distributors not to take action. »
