50 Years of Volkswagen Golf: A Revolutionary Model for Young and Families

The Volkswagen Golf celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. When it was released in 1974, it not only allowed the German brand to relaunch itself, but it completely revolutionized the market, attracting both young people and families.

The Volkswagen Golf was launched in 1974 to replace another famous car from the German brand, the Beetle. Today, the Golf is in its eighth generation. And for its 50th anniversary, it should reach 40 million copies sold.

Between 1974 and its end of life in 1983, the Golf 1 was sold in nearly 7 million units worldwide. The figure is worthy of the revolution it embodied: a car that is both young and family friendly.

On the occasion of this 50th anniversary, the German brand looked back on the history and success of the model during the “Rétromobile” in Paris, a collector’s car exhibition.

A practical model

The Volkswagen Golf was more practical than the Beetle and other models at the time of its release. “You had the rear hatch, space in the trunk to store the shopping,” says Maurice Montavon, former Volkswagen dealer in Develier (JU), Saturday in the 7:30 p.m.

“If we want to talk regarding the Beetle, you had a small trunk that didn’t offer enough space. The Golf changes that,” he adds. This new model also offered a folding rear seat, allowing the interior space to be optimized differently according to needs.

Versatile, the Volkswagen Golf is distinguished from the Beetle, in addition to its practical and technical characteristics, by its design created by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its shapes are marked by straight lines, in comparison with the much more rounded Beetle.

Easy repairs

Daniel Wüthrich, mechanic in Grandfontaine (JU), is passionate regarding Volkswagen Golfs and owns three original models, one of which is under repair. He is particularly attracted by the ease with which these models can be restored, whether civilian or sports.

“It’s a car that’s simple, easy to repair. They’ve been sold so many times around the world that you can always find a lot of parts, even original parts if you’re a little lucky. And then… . the noise… the noise”, testifies, fascinated, the mechanic.
