Credit approval for the radar offensive for 2024 and 2025
Vienna (OTS/RK) – GR Ernst Holzmann (SPÖ) said it was regarding investments amounting to 3.3 million euros for the next four years. The aim is to purchase radar devices that will be used, among other things, in the fight once morest the roadrunner scene. Holzmann called on Transport Minister Gewessler (GREEN) to authorize cities to allow access restrictions using photo cameras.
GR Kilian Stark (GREEN) replied that since October there has been a draft amendment to the road ordinance that contains the required points. As far as access controls to the city center are concerned, there is a problem with data protection. There is a danger that cameras might deter demonstrators because people are afraid of being monitored. A function that allows the cameras to be visibly covered remotely might help.
GR Erich Valentin (SPÖ) called the draft amendment in the Ministry of Transport “a mockery”. The requirement contained therein to remove all cameras at events and demonstrations only to reinstall them followingwards means an immense effort that other municipalities would have also rejected. Experts have not yet expressed any concerns regarding data protection. The Inner City district will probably have to live with “having to endure a third more traffic than is necessary,” concluded Valentin.
Vote: The item of business would be approved by a majority. A motion submitted by the SPÖ and NEOS to calm traffic in the inner city was also accepted; two motions from the FPÖ did not receive the necessary majority.
Funding to the Folklore Association for the years 2024/25
GR Mag. Ursula Berner, MA (GREEN) explained that it was regarding the folklore museum and new initiatives. She will support these efforts and agree to the funding. She introduced a motion on the topic of coexistence and peace. Specifically, the application was regarding supporting the international peace project “Revive Time” and the planting of the peace persimmon tree from the Jewish Museum exhibition in the public town hall park.
GR Jörg Neumayer, MA (SPÖ) was pleased that “the renovation of the folklore museum is progressing”. It is a very successful initiative that expands the intercultural offerings in Vienna. “Our city lives from and through diversity,” concludes Neumayer.
Vote: The funding was approved unanimously. The Greens’ motion did not receive the necessary majority.
Funding to the Vienna Cultural Service Association
GR Stefan Berger (FPÖ) initially praised the file situation in the cultural committees, which had noticeably improved. The present funding concerns the Danube Island Festival, in which the SPÖ is a co-organizer, but is not mentioned in the documents. That’s why he won’t agree to the funding. Although the files are now much more extensive, a project calculation is still missing. Berger submitted a proposal to expand the funding guidelines in the culture and science division to include the mandatory submission of a child protection concept if the funding applicant works with minors. Another application called for the control of cultural businesses and funding recipients of the City of Vienna in which minors participate by the Vienna Child and Youth Welfare Service.
GRin Patricia Anderle (SPÖ) presented figures for the Danube Island Festival, which “has stood for community, diversity and culture for over 40 years”. The cultural service would also organize other events such as the Belt Nightwalk. All of these events are free and would significantly enrich cultural life in Vienna.
GRin Mag. Ursula Berner, MA (GREENS) criticized the fact that the individual initiatives such as Donauinselfest or Belt Nightwalk did not apply for funding directly to the MA7. Then everything would be more transparent and understandable. The current construct is “irritating”. Berner misses a breakdown of how many male, female or non-binary artists performed at the Donauinselfest last year. Berner also called for the purchase of a mobile wheelchair ramp for the town hall in the interests of accessibility and submitted an application for this. Another motion called for the renaming of racist and colonialist street names in Vienna.
Vote: The funding was approved by a majority. The FPÖ’s application for a mandatory child protection concept for funding applications was assigned to the responsible committee. All other motions submitted did not achieve the necessary majority.
The public part of the 50th meeting of the Vienna City Council ended at 8:50 p.m.
