The setting up of a chic and formal dinner table: arrangement of cutlery, dressing of glasses…
As etiquette expert Pamela Hillings explains, once you understand the logic of table setting, things become less complicated. Not false !
- Start by placing your plate in the center.
- The forks are placed to the left of the plate. We would like to point out that according to the rules of the French table, the forks rest with their teeth on the tablecloth and the spoon with its back to the ceiling.
- Spoons and knives are placed on the right.
- As for stemmed glasses, they are placed at the top, to the right of the dinner plate.
- The plate intended to receive bread or spread is placed on the placemat and must be aligned with the fork furthest to the right.
- Cutlery should line up with the bottom edge of the trivet.
- The water glass is placed at the top of the table knife, the white wine glass to its right and the red wine glass in the middle. If you have champagne planned for the evening, place the glass of champagne as far to the right as possible to make it easier for guests to toast. We have thought of everything!
Last thing ! Avoid placing a napkin under the forks. In addition to creating noise, the fork falls when guests want to use the napkin. It’s not very elegant!
-
Set the table for soup
Great occasion, family meal… Starting with soup is a tradition! This is served in a heated soup dish atop a dinner plate. The soup is tasted with a tablespoon. Once your guests are finished, the plate, bowl and spoon are removed. The bread plate and the butter knife remain!
When the soup is served, the resting place of the spoon is in the bowl. Once a utensil has touched a food, there is no longer any question of it touching the tablecloth!

Set the table for the fish
Let’s go to the table for the fish! A medium sized plate arrives carrying the fish dish. Use the fish fork on the outside left and then the fish knife on the outside right. When finished, guests should place their cutlery diagonally across the plate. It’s done !

Presentation of the table for the main course
Once the main course is cleared, the table is set for the main course. The large plate must be brought with food (or empty, if the food is served at the table). In both cases, the plate should be preheated unless the main course is served cold. Enjoy your dish with the table fork and knife!

Regarding the salad, it is served on a medium-sized plate. To taste it, we use the fork which has a wider end tooth than the other forks, to cut. After that, the butter knife, the two wine glasses, the salad plate and the fork are cleared. Thus, the table is well set for dessert!
