Some turntables are all-in-one devices and include everything you need to listen to music. However, most of them still require an external amplifier capable of bringing the weak electrical signal from the cartridge to an audible sound level.

You can improve sound quality by using a separate phono preamplifier. Generally, a separate model offers better sound quality than the phono preamplifier built ‘for free’ into your standard amplifier. A phono preamplifier is even essential if your current amplifier does not have a dedicated PHONO input.

The most advanced models also offer additional options to adjust the amplification more precisely depending on the cartridge you are using on your turntable. They often allow you to configure the sound according to your personal preferences.

Often, Vinyl records purchased second-hand accumulate dust and dirt in their grooves over the years. Even new discs can contain invisible dirt due to residue from the production process. These dirt are often the cause of the crackles, hisses and other noises that, ironically, are considered by many to be part of the charm of vinyl records. However, a truly clean record is quiet and only lets you hear the music.

Buying a carbon fiber brush is your first and best ally once morest dirty vinyls. Place the record on the turntable and lightly press the bristles of the brush into the grooves. Turn on your turntable and gently slide the brush from the center to the outside of the vinyl. You’ll be amazed at how much dust you can remove from some discs!

For those who want to go further in cleaning their vinyls, there are machines designed for wet cleaning. Most of them allow you to apply a cleaning liquid yourself to the spinning disc which is then sucked up by the device. Result: a dry and thoroughly cleaned vinyl. On the other end of the spectrum, there are fully automatic (and expensive!) machines that clean and dry your vinyls using ultrasound. These devices manage to remove the smallest particles of dirt from the grooves of your records.

A turntable is a very sensitive device, designed to capture the slightest vibrations and nuances in the grooves of your vinyl records. Therefore, do not place your turntable anywhere in your home.

First make sure that the level of your turntable is perfectly adjusted to avoid errors in the movement of the tone arm on the record. Also avoid putting it on the floor or, worse yet, on your speakers. The sounds of footsteps on the floor, sound waves and vibrations from your speakers will be picked up by your turntable and will take over the music you want to listen to.

Place your turntable on a flat surface, between your speakers or at a distance from them. You will therefore benefit from optimal sound quality.
