Indeed, 66% of perfume consumers think it can : “do more than just give products a good smell”, shares a DSM-Firmenich study.

Beyond his olfactory interest, scent might influence the brain. Pamela Dalton, co-chair of the postdoctoral training program at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, specializing in the study of taste and smell, provided an update on this to the British media outlet Women’s Health. “The prefrontal cortex helps us prioritize reducing impulsivity and integrates information from the olfactory cortex and other brain regions“, she explains.

So, the smells might influence our concentration. This led the Firmenich company to develop with EmotiCODE a program dedicated to the creation of perfumes beneficial effect on body and mind. For this, scientists used artificial intelligence. The latter allowed them to identify more than 34,000 perfumes that consumers associate with improved mental performance. They then compiled this data in order to obtain a model for creating attention-stimulating fragrances.

These mixtures have also been tested on people using two cognitive tests. The first focused on attention and interference, and the other on a mental arithmetic task. “We diffused the scent in the room where people were performing these tasks and found that, compared to a control odor and in the absence of scIn any case, subjects exposed to the scent of focus were more precise and faster“, explain the researchers.
