Sleeping too much or too little, taking too long naps, snoring or suffering from sleep apnea… According to a study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, people suffering from these sleep problems are more likely to of being victims of a stroke.

It is now established, poor quality nights promote cardiovascular disease, including the risk of stroke. But how much? And are all sleep problems created equal? For example, does snoring expose you to the same risks as being insomniac?

Researchers at the University of Galway in Ireland conducted a study of 4,500 people, half of whom had a stroke. The participants were asked regarding their sleep behaviors, including the number of hours slept, the quality of sleep, if they snored, etc.

What did they conclude? That people who slept too much or too little were at greater risk of stroke. “Those who slept less than 5 hours were three times more likely to have a stroke than those who slept 7. And the risk was doubled when they slept more than 9 hours. »

Between 6 and 8 hours

This is not the first time that the importance of sleep duration has been mentioned. Already, in 2018, Greek researchers explained that a good night’s sleep is between 6 and 8 hours, neither more nor less. According to them, “Sleep influences biological processes like glucose metabolism, blood pressure and inflammation – all of which have an impact on cardiovascular disease. »

Another finding was that people who took naps longer than an hour were 88% more likely to have a stroke than those who didn’t. Snorers presented a risk almost doubled. As for those suffering from sleep apnea, the danger was multiplied by 3!

Just one piece of advice, if you are having trouble sleeping, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor regarding it. “Interventions to improve sleep might reduce the risk of stroke”launch the authors.
