Since 2011, ANSES has developed expertise in the field of FCO. In particular, based on existing skills, specialized structures and experience gained, the Agency implements a series of efforts to meet the needs of diagnostics, epidemiological surveillance and vaccinology.
FCO Diagnostics National Reference Laboratory
The Anses animal health laboratory in Maisons-Alfort provides virological diagnostics (detection of viral genomes by PCR, typing, virus isolation) as well as serological diagnostics.
As part of its reference activities, the Maisons-Alfort Animal Health Laboratory develops PCR diagnostics and manages the departmental veterinary laboratory network for molecular diagnostics. The real-time PCR technology developed in the laboratory thus spread to veterinary laboratories. ANSES NRL FCO participates in a network led by the FCO Community Reference Laboratory hosted by Spain’s Algete Laboratory.
ANSES is also heavily involved National Animal Health Epidemiology Surveillance Platformensuring the adequacy between the health hazards that exist or threaten the territory and the systems that monitor these hazards.
FCO research work
Over the years, the ANSES Animal Health Laboratory has been conducting various research projects on FCO. These are specifically designed to:
Characterization of FCO strains present in France at the molecular level, improved surveillance of FCO and epizootic hemorrhagic diseases caused by viruses close to FCO; production of specific detection of FCO virus serotypes 4, 8 and 3 in an ELISA test proteins; determine the presence of FCO and MHE viruses in overseas territories and characterize isolated strains; develop a high-throughput rtRT-PCR test for FCO virus detection and typing to study virus interactions with infected animal cells.
FCO risk assessment
The agency is regularly asked by the Department of Agriculture to analyze health conditions, assess risks associated with FCOs, and propose and evaluate progress on state (and sometimes local) surveillance and control measures. Its opinion makes it possible to identify a number of research needs aimed at better assessing risks and better controlling the spread of the virus. Some recommendations on surveillance, control and preventive measures are also made.
FCO Vaccine Evaluation and Authorization
The National Agency for Veterinary Medicines (ANMV) evaluates and, where appropriate, issues national and European Marketing Authorization (AMM) documents for all veterinary medicines. The FCO vaccines currently approved for marketing are inactivated vaccines containing a single serotype (serotype 1 or 8) or two serotypes (serotypes 1-8 or 2-4). They are suitable for use in cattle and/or sheep and may prevent or reduce viremia and, in some cases, reduce clinical signs caused by FCO viruses. Following contamination of serotype 3 on farms in Belgium and Germany, ANMV issued interim use authorizations (ATUs) for two vaccines against this serotype in July 2024.
