5 new cases of monkeypox in Atlántico: 4 in Distrito and one in Sabanalarga

Health authorities confirmed five new cases of the disease known as monkeypox in the department.

According to the District Department of Health, four cases were registered in the city of Barranquilla in male patients of 33, 34, 43.49 years of age.

Two of these cases are closely related, in the others there are no links between them. One of the positives indicated close contact with another positive patient in Bogotá.

For its part, the Secretary of Health of the Atlantic reported a new case in savannalongwhose contagion occurred following having contact with an imported case.

The departmental health entity indicated that through the surveillance team it keeps the infected person in isolation and monitors close contacts.

The previous cases were confirmed following obtaining a positive result from a PCR test that was being analyzed for the study of the disease.

In this sense, there are nine cases of monkeypox in Barranquilla and three in the Atlantic, in the municipalities of Soledad, Malambo and Sabanalarga.

“The network of laboratories of the National Institute of Health has confirmed new cases of monkeypox in Barranquilla. It is evident that the mode of transmission by sexual activity is still relevant and concentrates a significant number of cases, therefore, it is timely and necessary to reiterate that responsible sexual activity is essential to avoid greater risks, viral exposure and new cases “, said the District Secretary of Health, Humberto Mendoza Charris.

Wearing face masks covering the nose and mouth in crowded places and frequent hand washing are self-care practices that limit the risk of contagion, not only for monkeypox, but for all the diseases that are circulating in the second rainy season,” added

How is monkeypox spread?

Direct contact with:

1. Skin lesions or fluids from a person positive for monkeypox.
2. Objects, fabrics, bedding and surfaces contaminated with the virus.
3. Respiratory secretions.

For intimate relationships:

1. Hugs, kisses.
2. Prolonged face-to-face contacts.
3. Sexual intercourse of all kinds with people positive for monkeypox.
4. Having multiple sexual partners increases the risk of getting monkeypox.

Recognize the main symptoms of the virus

Fever, swollen glands, headache, muscle and back pain, sore throat, cough, chills, exhaustion or tiredness, rash on the mouth, hands, feet, face or genital area.

In addition to taking all the precautions indicated by the health authorities: responsible sexuality, frequent hand washing at least 5 times a day, proper use of the mask covering the nose and mouth, physical distance in spaces with crowds.
