5.5 magnitude earthquake in Syria leaves one dead and 26 injured

An earthquake in Syria measuring 5.5 degrees left at least one person dead and 26 others slightly injured. The event occurred at midnight in the province of Hamain the northwest of this country, according to various sources reported on Tuesday.

Most of the casualties were reported in the Salamiyah area, where an elderly woman died after experiencing a “severe panic attack.” Another 25 residents suffered minor injuries or nervous breakdowns, local police chief Khaled al-Ammarin told Syria’s official news agency SANA.

Syria’s National Seismological Center reported the quake’s magnitude at 5.5, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 5.0, indicating that its origin was at a depth of just 10 kilometers.

In February 2023, an earthquake with its epicenter in Turkey left thousands dead and widespread destruction in northwestern Syria, both in opposition-controlled regions and in territories somewhat further from the epicenter in the hands of Damascus.
