Bogota

In the early hours of this Sunday, May 14, Mother’s Day in Colombia, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) registered a earthquake of magnitude 5.0 in the municipality of Acacias – Goal.

With a shallow depth of 30 km, This seismic event occurred at 1:04 am and was felt especially in Bogotá, Medellín, Pereira and other areas of (Antioquia) and the rest of the country.

So far no emergencies or affectations to the community have been reported. However, users on social networks reported the magnitude of the event.

In Acacías, where the movement had its epicenter, the quake woke up the community. “I’m in Acacias and he felt very strong, he got me out of bed and I lost my sleep (…) WHAT A FRIGHTEN!…I won’t be able to sleep all night anymore,” said Manuel Blanco.

Another user, Steven Liévano, shared a video where the strong movement is observed.

Bogotá firefighters indicated that, so far, there are no emergencies associated with the earthquake in the country’s capital. “We will continue to monitor in case an emergency situation arises,” says the first report.

seismically active

This tremor is part of the 2,500 telluric movements that are registered in the country every month and whose activity occurs especially on the coasts of the Pacific Ocean, in the Caribbean regioney around the three mountain ranges, where the Bucaramanga seismic nest.

The SGC explained to Caracol Radio in previous days that Colombia is a seismically active country, which means that, due to its geological and tectonic configuration, there are many plates that are in contact in a large part of the national territory.

What to do during an earthquake?

In the event that such a situation arises, the first recommendation is to avoid sticking to walls, glass or furniture such as shelves that might fall. In turn, have on hand a first aid kit first aid, that also contains other objects such as:

  • Flashlight.
  • Whistle to send signals.
  • Radio with batteries.
  • Extinguisher.

On the other hand, if you live in an area where there is a greater danger of earthquakes, it is convenient for the family, especially if there are minors, to organize an action plan and periodically rehearse a drill. Setting safety points in these situations is key, whether at home, school or at work.

seismic nest

The Colombian Geological Service clarified that there are some locations in the country where earthquakes can be recorded daily and that accumulate 60% of the seismicity in Colombia: in which the Bucaramanga Seismic Nest stands out.

The entity clarified that a seismic nest “is a region where an unusual concentration of seismic activity can be observed more or less continuously.” The special thing regarding this phenomenon is that only three have been documented in the world.

These correspond to the seismic nests of Vrancea (Romania), in Eastern Europe, and of the Hindu-Kush (Afghanistan), on the imposing mountain range of the Himalayas that is home to some of the highest peaks in the world.

“From the SGC, the entity in charge of monitoring and reporting earthquakes in the country, we remember that there is no scientifically proven method that allows earthquakes to be predicted,” the entity concluded.
