About 94.4% of household plastic waste collected is bottles, cups, trays and packaging films, the Swiss Association of Plastic Recyclers (VSPR) said on Tuesday.

According to the 3rd monitoring carried out by the association, 8,594 tonnes of plastic waste were collected last year, i.e. 1,375 tonnes more than in 2020. “The objective of the 20,000 tonnes needed to build a center Swiss sorting is becoming more and more tangible,” writes the VSPR.

Household plastic waste is collected in 484 municipalities. If we consider the quantities collected per inhabitant, Uri comes first with 4.1 kilos per inhabitant, followed by the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (3 kilos per inhabitant), Thurgau (2.8 kilos) , Nidwalden (2.6 kilos) and Schaffhausen (2.5 kilos).

It is in the canton of Aargau that the largest quantities of plastics were collected, 1403 tons. Next come Zurich (1,225 tons) and St. Gallen (889 tons). In French-speaking Switzerland, only Valais provides figures: 75 tonnes were collected there in 2021 (67 in 2020), i.e. 200 grams per inhabitant.
