49th Annual Lehigh Paul Short Run: Navy Cross Country Team Heads to Bethlehem

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy cross country team heads to Bethlehem, Pa. for the 49th annual Lehigh Paul Short Run that will take place this Saturday at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.

The Paul Short Run will feature 12 races throughout the day starting with two open races, six college races, and ending with four high school races. Navy will take part in the men’s open 8K (9:30 a.m.), women’s open 6K (10:15 a.m.), men’s college gold 8K (11:00 a.m.), and women’s college gold 6K (11:45 a.m.).

Results will be available via Leone Timing.

The Paul Short Run is in honor of the late Paul Short who served as Lehigh’s Business Manager and Assistant Director of Athletics for 29 years. During his tenure at Lehigh, Short became an avid fan of Lehigh cross country and track and field.

Navy’s men’s cross country team has won the Paul Short Run three times, claiming first place in 1982, 1984, and 2014.

Last Time Out (MEN)

Navy completed competition at the Virginia College & Open Invitational on a rainy morning at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va., finishing 19th overall among the 23 teams competing in the 8K race. Senior team captain Sam Keeny was the Midshipmen’s top runner, coming in 49th overall to finish among the top 25-percent of all competitors.

Northern Arizona claimed the men’s race with a combined low score of 71, finishing 30 points ahead of BYU who took second with 101 points. North Carolina (157 points), Syracuse (167), and Villanova (169) rounded out the top five. Meet-host Virginia came in seventh place with 214 points.

Keeny clocked a team-best time of 23:59.9 to finish 49th overall among the 217 total competitors. Murphy Smith followed, crossing the finish line with a time of 24:16.0, while Alexander Kirkland was third among Midshipmen runners with a time of 24:18.5. Justin Mumford (24:38.5) and Luke Nester (24:43.5) rounded out Navy’s top five, while Jackson Nguyen (25:06.6) and Matt Newell (25:09.4) closed out the Midshipmen’s top seven competitors.

Last Time Out (WOMEN)

Senior team captain Emily Boutin posted a 17th-place finish in the women’s collegiate 5K on a rainy Saturday morning at the 2023 Virginia College & Open Invitational at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. Boutin clocked a 16:43.4 to lead all Midshipmen on the day.

Navy finished 20th among the 23 teams that competed, which included nearly a dozen Power 5 schools. Northern Arizona earned first-place distinction, tallying a team-low 48 points, while Stanford followed with 104 points for second. Meet-host Virginia posted 123 points for third place, while Washington (131) and Georgetown (204) rounded out the top five.

Boutin finished the day with a team-best time of 16:43.4. The senior was three seconds back of entering the top 15. She was in 85th through the first check point, but moved up 43 spots into 42nd-place through 2,000m. At 3K into the race, Boutin was at 10:37.2 and moved up another nine spots into 33rd. At the final check point, the Chicopee, Mass. native moved herself into the top 20 at 18th with 1,000m remaining. In the final push, Boutin was able to maneuver her way into a 17th-place finish.

Caroline Harding (18:05.7) was second among Navy runners, while McKenna Brophy (18:09.1) was third among the Midshipmen. Sophomores Mia-Claire Kezal (18:20.2) and Sophie Compton (18:20.6) finished back-to-back with four hundredths of a second separating the duo. Freshman Sarah Colebrooke (18:38.1) and junior Olivia Lutkevich (19:02.8) rounded out Navy’s top seven runners.

Following the Paul Short Run, the Midshipmen will have a week off to prepare for the annual Army-Navy Star Meet, which will be in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
