The tragic toll from the collapse of a section of highway in southern China has reached 48 dead.
Some twenty vehicles were trapped due to the collapse of a section of highway connecting Meichu City and Dabu County, Guangdong Province, at around 02:10 (21:10 Tuesday Greek time), according to the news agency Nea China.
The public television network CCTV, for its part, spoke of a “natural geological disaster”, due to the recent “continuous heavy rains”.
Water mains have been damaged in recent weeks in the industrial province of Guangdong, with the capital Canton, causing large-scale flooding and landslides.
According to newsbeast, the past few days have seen much heavier than normal rains for the season, just ahead of the monsoon season.
