There was a bloody act in southern Styria on Saturday morning. A 47-year-old woman was apparently shot by her ex-husband (52) in Wolfsberg im Schwarzautal. The man committed suicide at the alleged crime scene. The woman was resuscitated, ultimately in vain, a police officer told the APA. The emergency services were alerted by the 47-year-old’s daughter.

The woman’s daughter had to make the terrible discovery – the body of the 52-year-old and then her seriously injured mother. She had been staying with relatives in the house next door and is not the biological daughter of the suspected shooter. The 47-year-old and her ex-husband had no children together. The daughter immediately called the emergency services, who in turn alerted the police. There was currently no information regarding the motive, but investigations are still ongoing. The woman killed had been divorced from the 52-year-old for a few months; he himself had lived not far away in another town. He came to the house in the southern Styrian district of Leibnitz in his car; the crime was probably committed between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., a police spokesman told APA.

The firearm is said to be a shotgun, which the man owned legally. The State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation and was still at the crime scene in the morning, as was the forensic team. The daughter was cared for by the crisis intervention team. A firearms and ballistics expert was called in to investigate. The public prosecutor ordered an autopsy of the two bodies.

In a statement, SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner expressed deep concern and sympathy at the 20th femicide in Austria this year. The women’s minister must bring together all the necessary ministries and experts in matters of violence and victim protection as well as women’s advice centers and implement the National Violence Protection Action Plan. “We owe it to the murdered women and their survivors,” said Holzleitner, among other things. The Istanbul Convention, the agreement that is intended to protect women and girls from violence, has still not been fully implemented in Austria.

Only ten days ago there were two deaths in Wagna, southern Styria, following a family dispute: a son stabbed his father and then shot himself with his handgun. And at the end of August, a femicide was discovered: a man had stabbed his partner near Fürstenfeld in eastern Styria and then killed himself with a gun in the garage of the house.
