450 Decapitated Skeletons: Unveiling the Dark History of Vampire Beliefs in Poland

The remains of regarding 450 people were discovered in a grave in the rural municipality of Luzino, in the Polish region of West Pomerania. The discovery occurred during road works in the place.

Archaeologists conducting the excavations confirmed that some of the remains had been decapitated and the severed heads had been placed between the legs of the deceased.

As reported by the Polish outlet Nadmorski24, the archaeologist Maciej Stromski explained that these are “examples of the belief in the dead returning from the grave, which might only be stopped by beheading. It was believed that if a member of the family of the deceased died shortly following the funeral, then he or she might be a vampire. following burial, the grave was dug and the head cut off of the deceased, which was then placed on the legs”.



The specialist added that in around 30 percent of the tombs discovered, the researchers also they found bricks placed next to the legsarms and heads of the skeletons.

Records of myths regarding the living dead date back to the 11th century in Central Europe. People feared that some of those buried would make their way back to the surface as blood-sucking monsters and terrorize the living.



It is not uncommon to find burial sites in the region where a metal rod, or stake, has been hammered through the skull of the deceased. People at the time believed that this was a way of make sure the person was still dead.
