66% of private executives find that there is too much “paperwork and administration” in their work, according to a report published Thursday by Project Sens, an association of leaders committed to giving meaning to work.
43% of working people plan to leave their job for a more meaningful one within two years. This is detailed in a report entitled “Meaning at work: understanding new aspirations in work”, published Thursday, June 22 by the Sens Project, an association of leaders committed to giving meaning to work.
>> Employment: following the “great resignation”, more and more followers of “quiet quitting” in companies
In a context marked by the health crisis, growing ecological concerns and the decline in unemployment, the study highlights the new aspirations of working people. The French do not stray from work, but ask for more meaning in their missions. Some seek an ecological vocation, others aspire to more autonomy and participation in their work.
Only one in five working people consider their work very important
In detail, one in two women (50%), one in two managers (52%) and 59% of those under 35 plan to leave their job within two years for another with more meaning. Employees who give meaning to their work are three times more likely to stay with the company.
According to the study, the relationship to work deteriorates over the years. In 1990, 60% of working people considered work to be a very important element in their lives. In 2022, only one in five working people (21%) consider their work very important. Thirty years ago, in 1993, remuneration was the number one motivation for a third of working people (33%). In 2022, 45% of working people put remuneration at the top of their motivation. Finally, in 2006, half of working people took their work as a constraint rather than a fulfillment. In 2022, the trend is reversed: 54% of respondents consider work to be a constraint rather than a fulfillment.
>> Recruitment: increasingly distant expectations between employers and employees
The survey also reveals that 29% of working people do not perceive the meaning and usefulness of their job. And 42% of executives under 35 have already resigned from a permanent position within two years of taking up their position. Business processes contribute to employee fatigue. According to the study, 66% of executives in the private sector find that there are too many “paperwork and administration” in their work. This feeling is shared by 76% of managers in the public sector.
Reduce administrative constraints and strengthen employee autonomy
Finally, the study points to a discrepancy in the perception of meaning at work between employees and managers. 90% of employees find it important or essential that the company allows them to give meaning to their work. As for leaders, 14% say they want to get started and 85% do not plan to do so, either because it is not important to them (23%) or because they consider they have already done so ( 62%).
To give meaning to work, Projet Sens is launching a manifesto so that business organizations “promote the meeting between individual aspirations and social utility”.
>> Employment: the fears and hopes of employees faced with the arrival of artificial intelligence
The association recommends in particular to take into account the proposals of the employees on the reality of their work, to reduce the administrative constraints and the decision-making processes and to reinforce their autonomy. She advises identifying within teams the factors that prevent them from doing their job well. She advises giving development prospects to those who do not have them, in particular by enriching missions, managing careers and training. Project Sens also wishes to create the conditions for real consideration and recognition, without waiting for annual evaluations.
Project Sens is an association of 10 companies, Groupe ADP, AG2R La Mondiale, Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale, Dassault Systèmes, MAIF, Orange, RATP Group, Renault Group, SNCF and Veolia, representing one million employees. The study was carried out with the managers, employees and HR departments of these companies.
