**Chief Inspector Müller:** Thank you for having me. Indeed, we recently apprehended a suspect who was involved in at least 42 break-ins into basement compartments and bicycle storage areas between October 2023 and February 2024. This series of burglaries has caused considerable concern in our communities.
**Interviewer:** That sounds alarming. Can you provide more details about the method the suspect used to carry out these burglaries?
**Chief Inspector Müller:** The suspect gained unauthorized access to these premises by using various means, often including force. His primary targets were basement compartments, which tend to be less secure and more vulnerable. Once inside, he would steal bicycles and other valuable items.
**Interviewer:** It’s troubling to hear about the impact this case has had on the community. What has been the total damage estimated from these burglaries?
**Chief Inspector Müller:** The reported damage is in the mid-five-digit euro range, which underscores the gravity of the situation. Not only does it represent a loss of property for the victims, but it also affects the overall sense of safety in the area.
**Interviewer:** After the investigation, it seems the suspect was arrested in Croatia. What can you tell us about that process?
**Chief Inspector Müller:** Yes, the suspect is a Slovakian national who was arrested for similar crimes in Croatia. We are currently working on the extradition process to bring him back to Austria once he has served his sentence there. This case highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling cross-border crime.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, how can the community better protect themselves from such burglary incidents in the future?
**Chief Inspector Müller:** It’s essential for residents to enhance their security measures. This includes securing basements, using better locks, and being vigilant about unusual activities in their neighborhoods. We also encourage people to report any suspicious behavior to the police immediately. Education and awareness are key in preventing such crimes.
