42.2 billion dirhams spending on consumer goods via the Internet in the UAE during 2022

Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: A report issued by the UAE Digital Government and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority showed that total spending on consumer goods via the Internet in the country during the past year amounted to regarding 42.26 billion dirhams.

The report indicated that the number of digital buyers who used the Internet to purchase services or consumer goods amounted to 7 million, and the average per capita digital spending on consumer goods amounted to 6,000 dirhams, while the percentage of purchasing goods out of all digital purchases through smart phones reached 70.5 percent.

Fashion topped the digital commerce sectors in the country during the past year with an amount of 16.68 billion dirhams, followed by electronics with an amount of 7.081 billion dirhams, then games and hobbies with an amount of 6.314 billion dirhams.

This was followed by personal care products with an amount of 4.234 billion dirhams, then furniture with an amount of 4.197 billion dirhams, then data and digital storage devices with an amount of 2.420 billion dirhams, and finally the food sector with an amount of 1.181 billion dirhams.

In terms of payment methods in digital commerce, 48 percent of these payments came through credit cards, 23 percent through a digital wallet, 11 percent through online bank transfer, 10 percent through completion of purchases and payment upon receipt, and 8 percent through other methods.

During April 2022, the UAE launched the National Strategy for the Digital Economy; With the aim of doubling the contribution of the digital economy to the gross domestic product from 9.7 percent in 2022 to 19.4 percent, and for the country to become the most prosperous digital economy center in the region and globally, within the next ten years.

It is noteworthy that the volume of digital spending mentioned in the report is limited to products and services sold by companies to the final consumer only, and not between companies.
