41 fires across the country in the last 24 hours

Local investigative offices, as well as Divisions of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.) are investigating the causes of the fires.

Regarding the large fire of the last two days in northeastern Attica for several hours, there is no active front, but strong ground firefighting forces remain in the area, dealing with scattered foci in the burned areas, while at the same time extinguishing any candles that appear in order to avoid the risk of flare-ups.

According to the Fire Department, 702 firefighters with 27 forest commando teams, 199 vehicles continue to work, while from the first light of the day until 1:00 p.m., 10 aircraft and 10 helicopters were periodically spraying water.

At the same time, according to the latest information from the Police, vehicular traffic was fully restored in the areas affected by the fires, as the last road section of Dionysos Avenue from the area of ​​Drosia to Nea Makri, which remained closed since in the morning.

Very high fire danger tomorrow for three regions

According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, for tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14, a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for the following areas:

– Region of Central Macedonia (PE of Halkidiki, including Mount Athos).

– Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (Thasos, Rodopi, Evros, including the island of Samothraki).

– North Aegean Region (Lemnos Region).

For this reason, the 2nd stage of operational readiness of the Fire Brigade is being implemented and aerial surveillance patrols will be carried out, as well as patrols by Fire, Police and Military forces.

In addition, the personnel of the Fire Services of the above Regional Units are put on partial alert, in order to deal with the increased service demands, which may arise due to a very high risk of fire (risk category 4).

At the same time, for the above areas, the Plan of Civil Protection actions to deal with risks due to forest fires is implemented, according to which, among other things, the implementation of the measure of the preventive ban on vehicle traffic and the stay of excursionists in national forests is foreseen, forests and “vulnerable” areas.

In direct cooperation with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, all the competent government agencies involved, as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the above regions, have been informed, so that they are on increased readiness to take measures within their competence.
