$400,000 stolen: son drugged dad to get his bitcoin
His father was in a coma for two days following a 24-year-old man from the United States dumped drugs in his tea. The motive: the son wanted to empty his dad’s bitcoin wallet undisturbed.
“Drink this, it’s good for you” – what sounds like the beginning of a mediocre “Tatort” episode actually led to a two-day coma in a man in the United States. His drug-addicted son (24) had poured the active ingredient benzodiazepine into his tea in order to empty the $400,000 Bitcoin wallet they had built together.
A letter the father was supposed to find following waking said, “It didn’t have to come to this. I’ll give you the best retirement.” But the young man had dosed the sedative completely wrong – and his father was only found on the floor of his bedroom two days later. The father then spent four days in the hospital suffering from severe dehydration and acute organ dysfunction.
drugs and bitcoin
The Washington Post tells the family, whose son now lives in a facility for former drug addicts, the whole story. Originally, the son had told his father regarding crypto money. He invested $100,000 in Bitcoin and quickly benefited from rising prices. However, the subsequent fall in the price worried the son so much that he tried to get his father to sell the virtual money. Probably also to finance his now out of control drug use.
The father, however, did not react to his son’s urging, remained calm and instead criticized the drug abuse. Plagued by his paranoia, the son didn’t stop his regular use of tranquilizers, coke and Adderall, instead taking the decision to sell the Bitcoin for his father.
After he fainted, the filius took his father’s smartphone and transferred the entire amount to an account that he controlled. It was only following two days – and several failed attempts at contact – that the son called one of the father’s ex-girlfriends and asked them to check on him. When she was also unable to reach the man, she called 911. Rescue workers found the man on the floor of his bedroom, breathing but unresponsive.
Mother has her son arrested
But since no one knew what had happened, it took a while for the young man’s mother to contact the police. The 24-year-old had now confessed to having drugged his father. Arriving at the hospital, the police first learned regarding the poisoned tea that had led to the coma. The son was arrested. The charge was initially attempted murder.
In the interests of the parents, who wanted to help their son, and various experts, the sentence was ultimately reduced to 125 days in prison and confiscation. In the meantime, the two are talking to each other once more and work through what has happened in recent years. The son explained to the “Washington Post” that although he had apologized several times, he wanted to prove through actions and behavior that his drug addiction was behind him.
The reports do not reveal what became of the cryptocurrency and whether the two inadvertently benefited from last year’s Bitcoin and Ethereum boom.
