Netflix has opened in Switzerland: From January 2022, the standard subscription with access on two devices for consumers in Switzerland will cost CHF 18.90 per month. That’s two francs more than before. That makes 226.80 francs per year.
Now the “SonntagsBlick” has compared the prices: That is significantly more than in any other country in the world. The same subscription costs 163.20 francs in our neighboring countries Germany, Italy and Austria.
70 percent more expensive than in Norway
In Norway, where people like the Swiss have very high purchasing power, the annual subscription only costs 130.80 francs. So Netflix costs around 70 percent more here than in Norway. Compared to their German-speaking neighbors, the Swiss pay 40 percent more, although the selection of films and series there is even slightly larger, as the “SonntagsBlick” continues.
André Bähler, head of politics and business at the Foundation for Consumer Protection (SKS), sees no reason for the high Netflix prices in Switzerland: “Streaming providers like Netflix operate worldwide and, thanks to digitization, have practically no local costs wear. The wage and price level in Switzerland should therefore not have any significant influence on pricing.”
