Serotonin is a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger that plays an important role in mood. It can affect everything from mood to memory and is also referred to as the ‘happiness hormone’. In fact, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which increase serotonin levels, are prescribed to treat depression. However, the effects of serotonin on the brain and body are not yet fully understood.
Serotonin is synthesized from an essential amino acid called tryptophan. It is produced in the brain and gastrointestinal tract and carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and the rest of the body.
Scientists believe that serotonin may affect neurological, cardiovascular and bone health, as well as blood clotting. Specifically, it can help regulate things like appetite, sleep, sexual function, and memory. Above all, serotonin is widely known as a hormone linked to mood. American health media ‘Prevention.com’ introduced a way to naturally increase serotonin levels.
1. move a lot
Exercise triggers the release of feel-good chemicals called tryptophan and endorphins. One study found that even just 90 minutes of exercise a week might improve mood as effectively as antidepressants.
2. Expose a lot of light
Exposure to bright light can help balance serotonin levels. You can exercise outdoors or use an artificial light fixture lightbox that is effective for seasonal depression.
3. Meditate often
Although research is in its infancy, there is evidence that meditation can help positively change the makeup of the brain by increasing serotonin.
4. Increase tryptophan
Turkey is rich in tryptophan, but the body cannot efficiently convert it to serotonin. Rather than eating more meat, try increasing your tryptophan levels by eating complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains that help your body process tryptophan better.
