The vasectomy is a surgery male sterilization. As a rule, this operation is performed under local anesthesia. Sometimes under general anesthesia.
The objective of this intervention is to interrupt the continuity of the vas deferens, at the level of the scrotumso that there are no more sperm in the ejaculate. It is a method of male contraception.

To do this, the surgeon resects a short portion of the vas deferens before sealing or coagulating the extremities. This intervention must be considered definitive, although recanalization methods exist. Indeed, there is no guarantee as to their effectiveness.
There is no no minimum age requirements to perform this intervention. All adult male adults can benefit from this permanent contraception, regardless of their marital status or the number of children.
Vasectomy: a spermogram to be performed within 3 months
After the operation, it is normal to feel pains. They should diminish within three to four days following the operation. Pain in the testicles may extend into the groin and lower abdomen. The scrotum can also swell moderately and take on a bluish color. The swelling should not become too large. The coloring will disappear within 7 to 15 days following the operation.
According the urological surgeon Jacques Bron, “the vasectomy is 99.9% effective. However, the sterility provided by the vasectomy is only obtained following 20 or 30 ejaculations or a delay of 2 to 3 months following the intervention. Therefore, following a vasectomy another contraceptive method must be used for up to 3 months following the operation. »
According to’French Association of Urology, it is necessary to carry out a “spermogram three months following the vasectomy. » This makes it possible in particular to check thelack of sperm in the patient’s ejaculate. In addition, the Association’s website specifies that vasectomy does not modify the production of male hormones or the volume of ejaculated semen. It is therefore useless to fear a modification linked to a lack of male hormones, such as a erectile dysfunction or an ejaculation disorder.
Finally, following the operation, it is advisable to favor moderate activity. A work stoppage may be prescribed. Also note that baths are not recommended until healing is complete. It is however possible to take showers.
