As winter approaches, many of us get chapped lips, so they can reveal a lot regarding the rest of your body.
Lips undergo many changes over the course of a person’s life,” said Dr. Bernard J. Hennessy, a dental specialist from Texas, USA.
“Some of these changes may indicate a medical problem,” he continued.
There are 4 signs of different conditions that you can discover in your lips, according to what the British newspaper “The Sun” reported.
Immunity deficiency Virus:
Having a sore on the inside of your lips that won’t go away might be a sign of HIV.
This virus attacks the body’s immune system, and in rare cases leads to AIDS.
There is no cure for HIV, but there are medications that enable infected people to live long and healthy lives, provided it is detected early.
Other signs in the mouth include fungal infections, necrotizing gum disease and a condition called Kaposi’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer caused by a virus that infects the skin and internal organs.
Pneumonia:
Everyone gets chapped lips from time to time, but in some cases, especially in children, peeling lips are a sign of pneumonia.
Pneumonia is a fatal infection that causes inflammation of the lungs, which often develops following an illness such as influenza or another virus.
While it severely affects people of any age, it is most often developed by younger or older people and is more serious among them.
Symptoms may appear differently in children than in adults.
The condition usually begins with fever, cough, breathing problems, and poor appetite.
As the disease progresses, children may suffer from dehydration, which appears with dry lips and rapid heartbeat.
cancer:
Having a spot on the lip that won’t heal might be a sign of cancer.
Lip cancer occurs on the skin of the lips, but is more common on the lower lip.
Most lip cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, which are easy to treat.
Lip cancer is caused by excessive exposure to sunlight and smoking.
You can reduce your risk by protecting your face from the sun and quitting smoking.
IBS:
If you notice cracking in the corner of your lips, you may be suffering from a condition associated with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).
The skin condition, known as angular cheilitis, causes dry, red patches at the corners of the mouth that may crack.
Several studies have found that 60% of people with IBS have oral health conditions, such as angular cheilitis.
It also occurs when someone has a vitamin B2 deficiency.
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition that affects the digestive system. This disease causes frequent diarrhea, bloating, cramps, and constipation.
Alternative causes of angular cheilitis include fungal infection or excess saliva in the corners of the mouth.
