4 MoUs Resulted from President Jokowi and PM James Marape Meeting – 2024-07-16 01:26:31

The state meeting between President Joko Widodo and Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister James Marape resulted in at least four bilateral cooperation agreements in the form of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) that were successfully signed and agreed to be implemented in the future.

First, the MoU on cross-border for buses or commercial transportation or cross border movement for commercial bus and goods. The agreement will regulate the transportation mechanism for public transportation crossings from Jayapura, Indonesia, to Vanimo, Papua New Guinea. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, and PNG Minister of Transportation and Civil Aviation Walter David.

Then, the second bilateral agreement is transportation for cross-border transportation by motorized vehicles or cross border transport of goods by motor vehicle. The bilateral understanding is intended to regulate the crossing of goods carried by public transport passengers crossing the Jayapura and Vanimo borders.

“The signing of two cross-border land MoUs for passenger and goods transportation is important to improve the economy and strengthen relations between residents on the border,” said the President, at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Monday (15/7).

The third MoU signed was on cooperation in the health sector on the border between the two countries. This is a renewal of the MoU that expired in 2022. The agreement regulates public health issues on the border between Indonesia and PNG. The MoU was signed by Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin and PNG Health Minister Lino Tom.

The last MoU that was successfully agreed upon was in the field of education or corporation in the field of education. It is a legal umbrella for various training activities and capacity building for educators and scholarships for students. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Indonesian Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Nadiem Makarim and PNG Minister of Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko.

“The renewal of the health cooperation agreement and the signing of education cooperation to strengthen collaboration between the two countries,” said Jokowi.

This is James Marape’s second bilateral visit. The first visit was made in March 2022. President Jokowi also made a return visit in July 2023. In addition to direct visits, the two heads of state also often meet on the sidelines of major agendas such as the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta in September 2023. (Z-11)
