4.2 magnitude earthquake shakes Andean region of Peru and affects several homes

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Andean region of Peru, in the Andean mountain rangeon Monday, causing damage to several homes but without causing injuries or deaths, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci).

The earthquake, perceived as moderate, occurred at 5:21 a.m. (10:21 GMT) on Monday, with its epicenter 12 kilometers northwest of San Miguel, in the province of La Mar, Ayacucho, and at a depth of 17 kilometers, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.

The Disaster Risk Management Office of the district municipality of Tambo carried out the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis following the intensity III earthquake in that town.

So far, Indeci has reported damage to homes, but no deaths or injuries have been reported.

According to local authorities, the population of Tambo and the district of La Mar perceived the earthquake as moderate.

Peru is located in a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 80% of the world’s seismic activity is concentrated, so its authorities frequently carry out earthquake drills to teach the population basic evacuation and assistance measures.
